Hypion, a Kiel-based project developer and full-service provider in the field of Power-to-X, and KEYOU, a pioneer in the field of hydrogen engines and "H2 Mobility as a Service" provider, are combining their expertise to expand hydrogen mobility in heavy-duty transport. With the 40-ton KEYOU truck, which is offered in a pay-per-use model, and the green hydrogen, which Hypion provides at attractive conditions at the hydrogen filling station in Neumünster, the hydrogen experts support regional logistics and transport companies in decarbonizing their fleets economically and sustainably.
Hypion as an active H2 pioneer in Northern Germany
As a project developer, Hypion is making a significant contribution to bringing green hydrogen projects to market. The green hydrogen specialist not only develops and plans projects, but also invests in and operates the infrastructure. In Neumünster, Schleswig-Holstein, the company has built the first filling station with a capacity of up to two tons of green hydrogen per day in 2023, specially optimized for heavy commercial vehicles. The station is part of a hydrogen hub, the first major distribution infrastructure to comply with the EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).
KEYOU and Hypion - joining forces for ramping up CO2-free hydrogen mobility
Together, KEYOU and Hypion want to solve the chicken-and-egg problem of hydrogen mobility. KEYOU prioritizes the delivery of its vehicles to regions that are able to supply the vehicles with green hydrogen. As part of its "H2 Mobility as a Service" offer, the hydrogen engine technology leader plans to deliver 40-ton trucks with zero-emission KEYOU-inside hydrogen engines to customers in the Neumünster region. This all-inclusive package includes not only the zero-emission vehicle, but also a comprehensive service and maintenance package, a 24/7 breakdown service, comprehensive and liability insurance, and the fuel itself. The aim is to enable transport companies to decarbonize their fleets as easily, predictably and with as little risk as possible.
To ensure the availability and affordability of green hydrogen for the operation of KEYOU's H2 vehicles, the Munich-based clean mobility company and the hydrogen expert from Schleswig-Holstein have agreed to offer the fuel to KEYOU customers at attractive conditions. Thanks to the cooperation between the two companies, customers will benefit from Hypion's low-cost green hydrogen and toll savings of up to €30,000 per year. At the same time, it ensures that the Neumünster filling station is sufficiently utilized, so that all participants in the value chain contribute to the establishment of a predictable and reliable hydrogen ecosystem.
Hydrogen as the key to more sustainable heavy-duty transportation
"What we share with KEYOU is the strong conviction that green hydrogen will play a key role in the decarbonization of heavy-duty transportation," said Dr. Stefan Rehm, Managing Director of Hypion. "Only by joining forces can we advance this technology and thus agreen future for road transport. We are therefore pleased to support KEYOU in successfully bringing its hydrogen combustion technology to the market. Together, we will be able to offer many transport companies in the region the opportunity to decarbonize their fleets with KEYOU's hydrogen vehicles and our green hydrogen. And of course, we will also benefit from the predictable purchase volumes of KEYOU's customers - a true win-win situation for all parties involved," Rehm added.
Pedro Bravo, CSO of KEYOU, added: "The cooperation with Hypion allows us to make our already excellent offer even more attractive and to extend it to customers in Schleswig-Holstein. Transport companies can only really benefit from our offer and decarbonize their fleet with our CO2-free and toll-reduced hydrogen vehicles if there is an appropriate infrastructure and affordable hydrogen prices. Every partnership with hydrogen producers and filling station operators brings us a big step forward in our mission to establish a real alternative to diesel in the market".
Sales of the KEYOU 40-ton truck have just begun, and the launch of the semitrailer tractor is planned for 2026. Currently, KEYOU is already in the starting blocks with its pioneering fleet. The KEYOU 18t trucks with hydrogen engines - based on a Daimler Actros chassis - will be used in selected regions in Germany.
